Simple Motion Measurement and Evaluation System

Simple Motion Measurement and Evaluation System

We are developing a simple motion measurement system consisting of a single camera and a small number of markers, along with software that visualizes the data to support motion analysis. Figure 1 shows the configuration of the simple motion measurement system. By using markers developed by AIST that offer higher accuracy than conventional ones, we can build a system that is easier to transport to the field and use for measurement without the need for large-scale measurement equipment such as motion capture systems. This system can measure both position and orientation at each measurement point (marker). The reference accuracy is a maximum positional error of 5 mm and a maximum orientation error of 2 degrees. It also supports measurements using a handheld camera without a fixed mount.

Building on the simple motion measurement system described above, we also developed a prototype system that estimates and visualizes the ground reaction forces acting on the soles of each foot during walking, based on the positions of the body segments obtained from markers. This system measures motion using a low-cost setup consisting of a single camera, a small number of markers (about 10), and a single PC, and can estimate the ground reaction forces on the soles of the feet at that time (Figure 2, right).
